Yes, there is a national holiday set aside to celebrate all things pizza. However obscure some of these national holidays are, and the fact that there doesn’t seem to be any documentation or presidential decree, funky and fun national holidays do exist. From National Lost Penny Day to Do a Grouch a Favor Day, it seems relevant and deserving that pizza should also be recognized.
What better way to celebrate February 9th than by enjoying a slice or two of America’s favorite food? In fact, most of us consider pizza a part of our normal diet and consume it on a pretty regular basis. What other food can come in so many styles and varieties that please just about every taste? Pizza is probably one of the most versatile foods on the planet. And it’s not just for lunch or dinner. Who doesn’t enjoy a slice of cold pizza in the morning, especially if you’re in a hurry and need to grab something quick and nutritious? It’s also great for a late night snack and can be easily warmed up in the microwave.
From coast to coast, Boston, Massachusetts to Las Colinas, Texas, Americans love their pizza so much that it is considered the preferred food by 36% of us. And given the fact that 17% of our restaurants are pizzerias, it makes sense. Americans consume over 23 pounds of pizza per person each year. That adds up to over 3 billion pizzas made and sold in the United States each year. One of our favorite days to order pizza is on Halloween because it’s so convenient. Super Bowl Sunday is by far the day when the most pizzas are ordered.
From the first pizza that was sold in Naples, Italy over 279 years ago to the massive appeal of pizza throughout the world today, the pizza has earned its day of fame. With over 3 billion sold in the United States alone, it seems the pizza is here to stay.
